Jane came to German Shepherd Rescue following a
call from the Orange County District Attorney. The District
Attorney explained that Jane's former caretaker (and we use the
term loosely) was facing charges for neglecting her and her canine
companion, Duke.
Jane was being held as "evidence" in the case and had spent SIX
MONTHS in a kennel run at a veterinarian's office while the court
case dragged along. The DA was hoping that we could help
these two orphaned dogs find the loving families that they
deserved to have all along.Jane and Duke were removed from
their owner's home because they were not receiving food,
veterinary care or any attention. They were virtually
abandoned in their own back yard and never given any affection.
We do NOT believe that Jane was abused, however it is obvious that
she is starved for affection and approval. Thanks to the
devotion of many volunteers and the donations of many animal
lovers, Duke has been adopted and Jane is now safe, healthy and
looking for a person of her own. She has completed a basic
obedience class where she learned commands such as sit, stay and
"good girl", probably a term that she had never heard before in
her life.
Jane is a happy girl, about 60 pounds, who loves people but is
distrustful of other dogs. She is very eager to please, but
she will need a very caring and quiet home -- one that realizes
that she underwent a hellacious ordeal for the first two years of
her life. Jane is completely recovered physically and she is
expected to live a long and healthy life. However, she still
bears some of the emotional scars of her experience, so she will
do best in an adult only home with someone who is patient and can
understand that she is still healing. We believe that she
would do best as an only dog and she does not like cats.
Jane's cruel owner will face trial in the month of June.
He is expected to plead guilty to six misdemeanor counts of animal
neglect. If the case goes as we hope, he will not be
permitted to own an animal of any type for at least 3 years and he
will be forced to pay restitution for the veterinary costs that
German Shepherd Rescue incurred in saving the two dogs. As
much as we are hoping that he will receive jail time, we are not
overly optimistic that he will be severely punished as laws
relating to animal welfare are still not enforced vigorously.
