Loki

Could you tell this sweet boy "Sorry, I can't help you"?  Well, we couldn't either...

Loki was found as a stray and taken to a county shelter.  His owners didn’t come to claim him, and his time was running out.  When the shelter discovered that Loki had some problems with his hips, they knew that he would never be adopted from the shelter.  Instead, they contacted the rescue to see if we could help.  Although our medical fund is tapped out, how could we tell this sweet boy that we would not save him?

Loki is a super-handsome 10-month old fun-bundle!  He has a gorgeous black and silver coat, and has yet to grow into his feet and tail!  At a recent adoption event, he wagged his tail and kissed kids of all ages, even while chewing on a rawhide toy.  He loves adults, too, and seems to be especially cute around men.  He is housebroken, walks well on a leash, and gets along well with other dogs.  He’s a little hesitant about getting into a car (nothing a dog cookie can’t cure), but is an excellent traveler once he’s in!  He prefers a wire crate to the airline-style crate.

Loki hasn’t had much training, but he has a great attitude and is smart and eager to please.  He hasn’t been exposed to a lot, so everything is new.  He saw himself in a mirror in his foster home, and tried to get that puppy to play with him!  He’s been de-wormed, is micro-chipped, and has all his shots.  And one big, happy smile.

Puppies chew, dig, bound around, have accidents if you’re not watchful, and make you laugh about every other minute.  Think hard about whether you have the time and energy to take on a young dog before you do so. There’s plenty of older, elegant and well-mannered German Shepherds available for adoption as well.  But if you’re ready, Loki has personality plus, and with your love, attention, and a class or two, you’ll have a dog that makes people stop in their tracks to admire him.

October 24, 2003:
Our vet determined that Loki will require hip surgery!!!  We are desperately trying to raise the money to pay for this procedure.  The vet feels that the sooner we do the surgery, the better the prognosis is for Loki to lead a normal, healthy life.  Can you help with a small donation to save this darling boy?

To make a donation to help Loki, please make your check to 'German Shepherd Rescue' and mail it to:

December 12, 2003:
Loki has had both surgeries and is recovering well.  Thanks to a very generous sponsor, we were able to pay for the first hip to be done. We had the second surgery two weeks later and the vet has allowed us to make payments on this one.

Loki had to be confined to a crate for the past 8 weeks, only coming out on a leash to go "potty".  It is very hard for a youngster like this to be cooped up this long, but Loki is a trooper.  His first recheck set of x-rays look great.  The first hip has healed completely and the second one is healing nicely.  The hips are positioned perfectly and will continue to tighten up as he heals.

He is still confined to a crate and dog run, but he now allowed to go on short leash walks and he can swim as much as he wants.  He began swim therapy a few weeks ago and is doing great.  He is a natural swimmer and has learned to "fetch".  He is an incredibly intelligent dog with a high ball drive.  He is extremely focused and would probably do well in agility once he is completely recovered.

Everyone who has worked with Loki thinks he is wonderful and handsome.  He is growing up to be quite a looker!  Loki's Orthopedist wants him to stay in his foster home until he is completely healed, so he won't be ready to go to his real home until some time in January.  In the meantime, he will continue his aqua therapy at his foster home so he will heal and get stronger quickly.

Loki is in a foster home.  If you are interested in meeting him, please email dpohn@aol.com, or click on the button below and fill out our online adoption application.

"That was fun!  Can we do it again?"
