Sunshine

What's worse than being an orphaned dog, in an animal shelter, with a broken leg?

Being an orphaned dog, in an animal shelter, with TWO broken legs!

When we learned about Sunshine from a county animal shelter employee, we were told that a beautiful purebred shepherd was going to be put down because she had TWO broken legs!  One of our wonderful volunteers dropped everything to drive out to the shelter to see if anything could be done to save her.

Sunshine is now in our care, recovering from being hit by a car.  Fortunately, only ONE leg was actually broken, the other was slightly injured but not broken.  Sunshine is a 2 year old classic black and tan girl who is anxious to get the cast off her leg!  Sunshine plays nicely with male dogs her own size and soon we will introduce her to some smaller dogs to see what she thinks of them.  She is somewhat protective of her food bowl, so we do not recommend her for a home with children under the age of 10.

The hardest part of her rehabilitation process is trying to keep her from bouncing around like all young shepherds do.  Sunshine is expected to make a full recovery, however the cost of her repairs have been very high.  We are seeking donations to help us with our mounting vet bills.  Donations of any amount are truly appreciated.

Sunshine was picked up by animal control after being struck by a car.  She was not wearing a collar or tags.  Sunshine is looking for a foster home until she can find her forever home.  We believe that her condition will improve significantly once she gets out of her cage at the vet's office.  Can you foster Sunshine during her recovery period?

November 20, 2003:
Sunshine is going to require corrective surgery on her leg.  We desperately need some help to raise the money to pay for this next surgery.  Any donation, small or large, will help!  If you enjoy watching the website and seeing all of these wonderful dogs being saved, please consider making a donation to help dogs like Sunshine.  Without you, there is no one else to help these sweet animals!  Our medical fund is almost non-existent right now, so Sunshine needs you!

Donation checks can be made to 'German Shepherd Rescue' and mailed to:

German Shepherd Rescue

All donations are tax-deductible, and will go towards vet bills for Sunshine.  To learn how to make a secure credit card donation through PayPal, click here.  Be sure to specify that your contribution is for Sunshine so that we can direct it to her bills.  Sunshine thanks you from the bottom of her heart!!!

January 12, 2004:
The date was set and Sunshine arrived at the orthopedic surgeon's as scheduled.  When the experts took additional x-rays of Sunshine's leg and examined her further, they determined that to do surgery on her at this point could actually worsen her limp and not provide her with any greater relief.  The surgeons tell us that Sunshine does not appear to be in any pain whatsoever, and that, while she may never be a marathon runner, she can enjoy a healthy and active life with a loving family.  We have been advised to keep her on "crate rest" for another couple of weeks to ensure that the bones have healed completely, but no surgery is required after all!  WHEW!  This is great news for Sunshine -- she told us that she was not looking forward to the prospect of surgery!

Sunshine loves children and can enjoy an active life provided that her family uses good judgment and doesn't expect her to jog daily.  She may encounter some arthritis in her leg as she grows older, but this is not uncommon in dogs who have not sustained an injury and it can usually be treated with coated aspirin.

We are so happy for Sunshine and can't wait to see her get her forever home!

Donations that were collected to help with Sunshine's surgery will be redirected to the surgical needs of Wink, our dog who will have to lose his eye due to a puncture wound.

Sunshine is in boarding awaiting her forever home.  If you are interested in meeting her, or in becoming a foster parent to her, please click on the button below and fill out our online adoption application.
