Savannah's Story

Savannah

This little girl is Savannah.  The reason that she is so skinny is that her owner was trying to starve her to death!  He intentionally left her without food for over a month, hoping that she would die.  When she didn't die, he brought her to the Downey animal shelter to ask them to kill her for him.

Why did this man want to kill Savannah?  Simple.  He bred her, took her puppies, then he was done with her.  He wanted to keep her puppies and get rid of Savannah because she was no longer needed.  When she wouldn't die of starvation, he brought her to the animal shelter to "get rid of her".  Although he did not speak English very well, through an interpreter he said "We used the dog to make puppies, but we don't want to make no more puppies, so we quit feeding the dog, but the dog don't die".

As it happened, one of our volunteers was at the shelter when this man brought poor Savannah in to be killed.  She could not believe her eyes when she saw this skeleton of a dog being lead by a piece of frayed rope.  Savannah could barely walk.  She had enough energy to hold herself upright, because she is a proud dog and she has a strong will to live.  In Savannah's beautiful brown eyes you can see her incredible spirit.

Blinded by tears, our volunteer took Savannah and rushed her to Huntington Pet Vet in Huntington Beach.  There, Dr. Allison Naito put Savannah immediately on intravenous fluids and antibiotics.  She said that Savannah hadn't eaten in over a month, and had been forced to drink her own urine in order to get fluids.  It was a miracle that Savannah had survived.  She had been used as an "incubator" for puppies, then literally thrown away.  She has not known the kindness of a loving family, just the heartbreak of having her puppies taken from her, then being tormented and left to die a slow, painful death.

We are desperately seeking donations to help save Savannah!  She will need to stay at the veterinarian's office for several weeks until she is strong enough to eat on her own.  Our resources are very limited right now, so we need all the help we can get from our supporters to save this beautiful dog.  Please send any donation that you can to:

Every little bit helps!  This poor dog needs us!  If you are as outraged as we are about this, lend us your support.  We plan to pursue action against the owner, even if it is just to make a point that animals are not to be used and discarded like this.  If we weren't there for her, Savannah's life would have ended on Saturday.  Her sad story would not have been heard, and she would have died a horrible death at the shelter - unwanted and unloved.

Please look at the pictures of Savannah below (if you can stomach it) and see if you can help her!  Through your kindness and generosity, we can show Savannah that people can be caring and loving.  In time, we will find Savannah a great new home where she will be loved and cherished, and she will never know the pain of hunger again!

Thank you in advance for helping us to save Savannah!
